very much what you’d expect on halloween day
Friday, October 31st, 2008So I’ve been watching all the Obama videos I can get my hands on youtube this Halloween and just days before the US election. I’ve stumbled upon different and interesting links which simply blew me away and took me to heights of satisfaction like the one with Marilyn Manson and Bill O’Reilly. The interview was short and direct yet it gave me profound insights about the man and artist who is Marilyn Manson I never thought was possible! You can easily tell that i’m being an idiot fan-boy over something I saw in youtube.
I always enjoy having an epiphany or a major realization after being stuck in a particularly useless way of thinking for years already. There’s nothing like having conceptions and preconceived notions shattered to bits. In this case, for the longest time I believed Marilyn Manson to be one of those phony artists full of glitz and glam and who are only in it for the money. As it turns out, he is a deeply thoughtful and intelligent artist. In other words, he is the real thing. He has the stuff that great philosophers and artists are made of and abundantly at that too.
Before, I used to see his music as gloomy and lacking in substance. I now realized from the way he presents his case that he does in fact turn or attempts to switch the lights on for everyone. Granted that most people would find his music and lyrics to be too extreme and that his choice of presentation is unnecessarily blasphemous and offensive. Dig but a little deeper and it would be too easy to see that he makes a lot of sense.
We all know him to be the harbinger of doom, the anti-christ, the reason why little kids commit suicide because of his music, someone people of decent minds should stay away from and so on. What we don’t know is that he has something legitimate to say and he conveys his message in a manner fitting and consistent with his theme. Unlike many who would gladly censor their thoughts so then the rest would accept it or would at least turn the ear to listen, this guy simply does what should be done to present an idea.
A little segue: Confusion comes when we say something not exactly what we’re thinking. When a person comes up with a particularly valid retort to an argument, there is this tendency to reply that the premises have been unfairly oversimplified. Yeah right. If your idea was so convoluted in the first place, why bother say and lay it down in the table and expect the correct response from a person who is just as confused as you are; purposefully misled and befuddled to hide the fact that you have nothing good to say anyway. Point is, entering into a discussion and hoping for a meaningful exchange of ideas with a person who is clearly dishonest with his principles and ideals is an exercise in futility. Marilyn Manson is not only true, honest and consistent with his ideas but also he knows exactly what he is trying to say without the usual bullcrap. He gets his point across without wading through the pool of discarded dead meat. Yep. Nice imagery.
Three minutes into the interview video, I slowly began to see him as a decent, interesting if not fascinating and most of all, coherent individual. He may dress up funny, have piercings in his body, paint his nails black and put on dark lipstick etc as O’Reilly pointed out, but all of these consist of something wonderful that on normal circumstances, with the usual backdrop of the oh so royally sacrosanct majority-belief, we would, instinctively, refer to as an art masterpiece. Maybe; may be not in the way most would see a masterpiece but which still, in the end, rightly deserves fair study. It is of no moment that he peddles the idea the he is an Anti-Christ because his argument is founded on seeing things in a different way. His image could have very well been an anti-flying teacup if flying teacups were the established delusion of the day.
I guess at this point I might appear to most as talking gibberish and that’s as expected. I am merely of the firm belief that just as a strange and unfamiliar language would sound like a string of nonsensical chatter, a man who expresses himself in unusual ways would be regarded as all baloney. Well, at least, that until the language or the person is deconstructed and deciphered and before the entire thing comes into place for everyone to understand and appreciate.
In keeping with the spirit(s- of the dead) of sharing, enjoy your own misconceptions shattered by playing the ff vids. Here ya go: marilyn manson with David Letterman
